Finding God in the Details: How the Temple and a Telescope Expand Our Spiritual Vision
With Eva Timothy
Some conversations settle deep into your soul—leaving a lasting impression long after the words have faded. I recently had one of those sacred moments with a dear friend, where we found ourselves diving into the parallels between temples and telescopes. It was one of those “linger in your spirit” kinds of discussions, and I haven’t looked at either the same since.
Eva Koleva Timothy’s artwork God Gazing—a powerful visual that invites us to lift our eyes, steady our hearts, and tune in to the divine light above us.
What struck me most was this simple truth: the more we align our spiritual lens, the more clearly we see God.
The Telescope: A Symbol of Spiritual Progression
A telescope is a tool designed to help us see things that are far away—beautiful, brilliant objects that exist beyond our natural line of sight. But here’s the secret: if you start zoomed in with high magnification, you’ll likely miss your target entirely. The image will be blurry, shaky, and confusing.
Instead, you start with a broad, wide-angle view. You take in the bigger picture. Only once you’ve found your anchor point do you slowly increase magnification to see greater detail with clarity.
Doesn’t that sound familiar?
Our walk with Christ follows the same divine pattern. We begin with a foundational covenant at baptism—taking His name upon us and learning to feel His Spirit more consistently. Then, through continued faith and discipleship, we’re invited to draw nearer through temple covenants. Each step increases our spiritual “magnification,” allowing us to focus more deeply on the Savior and gain clearer understanding of His eternal plan.
Covenants: The Steps to Spiritual Clarity
The temple is not just a building—it’s a lens. A lens that sharpens our vision and centers our focus on the Savior. Each covenant we make moves us closer, revealing new layers of truth, power, and connection with God.
Obedience comes first. It’s the realignment of our will with His.
Sacrifice follows, inviting us to lay down worldly desires in exchange for divine purpose.
The Law of the Gospel deepens our understanding and joy in Christ’s teachings.
Chastity becomes more than just physical loyalty—it reflects our covenant fidelity to the Bridegroom, our Savior.
And finally, Consecration—the full offering of our hearts, time, talents, and everything we have to building His kingdom.
Each law is a step in refining our view. Each one brings sharper focus, deeper meaning, and greater joy.
What Makes a “High-Quality Lens”?
Here’s where the metaphor gets even richer. A high-performing telescope doesn’t just rely on magnification—it relies on the quality of its parts:
Purity of Glass
Just as a telescope must be free from impurities to avoid distortion, we too need regular cleansing. Daily repentance helps remove the soot that clouds our vision, so we can see God’s hand more clearly in our lives.Consistent Shape
The lens must hold its form to stay aligned. That reminds me that perfection isn’t the goal—consistency is. It’s our daily efforts to pray, worship, serve, and stay close to God that create clarity over time.Sphere-Shaped Focus
A telescope uses curvature to direct light effectively. Spiritually, that shape represents staying centered on truth—the scriptures, the words of the prophets, and the still, small voice of personal revelation.Protective Coating
A special lens coating prevents light loss. How beautiful is it that we, too, have been given sacred “coverings”? Garments serve as a daily reminder of our covenants and a protection against the adversary’s distractions.
Just like the night sky, God’s plan is filled with wonder and magnitude beyond our understanding. He doesn’t rush to show us galaxies without number. Instead, He teaches us line upon line, covenant upon covenant—patiently guiding us until one day, we’ll not just be gazing at glory, but standing in it.
So today, I invite you to refocus your lens.
Look again at the commitments you’ve made. Realign your heart where needed. Let repentance bring clarity. Let scripture sharpen your view. And most of all—keep looking for God. He is the Light your soul is seeking.
Through Jesus Christ, we not only see more… we see clearly.
Reflect + Realign
Here are some questions to ponder this week:
Where in my life have I felt spiritually “zoomed in” too fast—and what broader view might God want me to see first?
Which covenant has recently deepened my relationship with Christ?
What can I do this week to purify my lens and refocus on my divine purpose?
Let your spiritual telescope be refined. And keep God-gazing.
